"If you want to be a developer, there is no specific college course geared to this. There is nowhere you can go to be a developer. No one leaves college to be a developer. They work in real estate or planning for a while. They see how these things work and see if they can do it," says development consultant Daren Fluke.

Experts agree that a college degree is essential. Which program you choose is more flexible.

A degree in civil engineering is very valuable in this business, says developer Jim Siepmann. He says developers should understand how things are built.

Business and management programs can also be helpful. He recommends that a person know how to sell and do it well, by getting into real estate. And throw in a couple of communications courses because that is important.
