Additional Information

A successful IR specialist must have two sets of skills, which might be seen as conflicting. The person must be able to grasp financial content, and they must be good at writing and public speaking.

Training in finance and communication (public relations) is useful.

Paul Lathigee is vice-president of an investor and media relations company. "I hire people that have had financial community experience -- those are the people that know how to do the job the best, people that have been brokers or financial planners."

Lathigee also recognizes the importance of a degree. He adds, however, that "if you can't communicate, what you learn doesn't matter."

For those who go into the field, be prepared for a new challenge every day. This job is not routine and it's not boring. "It is full of peaks and valleys, although I've never had a valley," says Jay Gould. He is a director of IR.
