Additional Information

The level of education required to become a medical illustrator is quite high. Students spend two years in a master's program, learning about illustration and taking medical courses with pre-med students.

Only four universities -- three in the United States and one in Canada -- offer a degree in medical illustration. Competition is fierce, especially since each institution only accepts between five and 12 students each year.

To be considered for a program, your undergraduate degree must emphasize art and science courses. In addition, you'll need to submit an art portfolio of your best artwork with samples of life drawings, still life scenes and storyboards.
