According to the Bureau of Indian Affairs, there are 562 tribes in the U.S.

There are plenty of opportunities for Native Americans to become involved in politics. Interested students can participate in the Youth Track program at the National Congress of American Indians (NCAI) to learn about what goes on at a national level.

"Students can also get involved in their tribal councils," says Rebecca Donovan Johnston. She is a legislative associate at the NCAI. "And they can always try to follow issues that concern them."

Incomes vary. "It can range from a voluntary position to being paid for full-time work," explains Brent Merrill. He is the public information coordinator of the Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde Community in Oregon.
