Insider Info

A school technology coordinator, sometimes known as a director of technology integration, has a big-picture perspective of the computer hardware and software needs of a school or university. They select the computers and other technological resources for classrooms and administration offices.

"I help teachers 1) transform their teaching and 2) help their learners to demonstrate their learning in new, transformed and innovative ways," says Lisa Read. She's the technology coordinator for a school district.

The technology coordinator might also install and maintain the hardware and software for a school. In other cases, the coordinator oversees a team of technology professionals who do the actual maintenance.

Sometimes the technology coordinator's duties fall to a teacher, instructor or senior administrator rather than a dedicated technology coordinator.

"One of my areas of responsibility is the Technology Integration portfolio, including supervision of the tech department," says Darren Gasper. He is the superintendent of education for a school district.

"I am also responsible for our division initiatives in rolling out blended or personalized learning across our division this year, which includes our Technology Strategic Plan around mobile devices, wireless infrastructure, etc."
