Additional Information

According to Raymond Renner, the owner of a water well company, the title of "technician" only applies to those with at least a two-year educational background. "Generally, a technician's got at least a two-year degree. It's often in geology, environment, hydrological geology or something related."

The actual construction of a water well, says Renner, is done by a driller, who learns through on-the-job experience.

Some two-year programs leading to an associate's degree in water technology offer good background in water-related geology and environmental issues. Some technical colleges offer one-year programs leading to certificates in similar areas, with a focus on hands-on well and water treatment work.

A basic knowledge of chemistry and some mechanical ability are important. Physical strength and coordination are helpful as well.
