Get ready to crack the books for a few years. More than 90 percent of artists have a bachelor's degree and 20 percent have a master's degree. That's according to the American Institute of Graphic Arts.

Art classes and plenty of reading are musts. "You need to know what art is and what makes up a good photograph or a good scene," says photostylist Peg Fetter. "Look at photos in current style or fashion magazines and you'll see that there are no wrinkles or bulges in anything -- at least there shouldn't be!"

Find a studio with a focus on photostyling and watch and learn. "Sweep the floor for $5 an hour if you have to, but you need to observe and learn. Get a foot in the door somewhere," says Fetter.
