Additional Information

Most brand managers have educational backgrounds in business and marketing, from college diplomas to full-fledged master's degrees in business management. Others worked their way into marketing positions from lesser sales roles.

"I had a sales position with the company and had an opportunity to move into the marketing department, so I was fortunate that way," says Rob Peter. He is product manager of a fruit beverage manufacturing company.

"But certainly, education helped. I have a diploma in marketing. I would say a diploma or degree in marketing or business administration is crucial."

"It's not so much about what you study in school, it's more about what you do while you're there," says Esi Eggleston. She is marketing director for a beauty care line.

"We really look for people who demonstrate strong leadership skills -- people who really make a difference, who change the game in whatever they do when they see opportunities on campus. They may start businesses or form organizations to fix a problem on campus. So whatever you study, whatever your environment is, get involved and take a stance and get results."
