Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You decide to break off the chase.

You've always wanted to see a tornado, but there'll be other storms in the future. Why risk your life and the life of your colleagues for this one? When you get back to the weather office, you learn the storm did create another tornado. You have a pang of regret. You would like to have seen that twister.

This was the real-life decision made by meteorologist and storm chaser Pat McCarthy. He says everyone recommends against core punching. Rain, hail and lightning make the roads treacherous, and no one wants to get stuck in a storm that suddenly changes direction.

McCarthy says he may regret missing the chance to witness and record the tornado. But he knows safety comes first. "Safety is an ongoing concern," he explains. "We try and do it as safely as possible."

Meteorologist Patricia Wontroba says McCarthy made the right decision. She says the movie Twister was dramatic, but it might encourage dangerous behavior. "I worry about people who don't know what they're doing making a fool of themselves or getting hurt."
