Real-Life Math -- Solution

You are going to spray both your apple and apricots with a fungicide this morning. Make sure you mix the spray correctly!

1. If you are planning to spray 30 gallons of water on the apple crop, how many ounces of CHEMX will you need to add?

The ratio is 0.5 ounces for every 2 gallons. This means the ratio is 0.5:2.

You have 30 gallons.

30 / 2 = 15

To maintain the correct ratio, you will need to multiply:

0.5 ounces x 15 = 7.5 ounces

You will have to add 7.5 ounces of CHEMX to the water.

2. You will spray the remaining 45 ounces of CHEMX on the apricot crop. How many gallons of water will you need to mix with this amount of chemical?

You need 1.5 ounces of CHEMX to every 1.5 gallons of water to spray on apricots.

This means the ratio is 1:1.

If you have 45 ounces of CHEMX, you will also need 45 gallons of water.
