Additional Information

A college degree often is not necessary to obtain a coaching position. However, value is placed on excellent communication and interpersonal skills, as well as demonstrated ability to work cooperatively with others. While such skills may be honed outside of a college setting, most required courses leading to a degree help enhance these abilities.

Since competitive swimming offers the bulk of coaching positions, it is understandable that a coach's prestige and reputation are commensurate with the ranking of their swimmers. Coaches vying for coveted positions with programs that train the most elite of swimmers for national and international competition are expected to be armed with the highest level of certification.

The American Swimming Coaches Association (ASCA) offers certification programs for this purpose.
