Hospital Administrator

Real-Life Communication

Learning never ends. At least that's the hope of officials at the American College of Health-Care Executives. It grants various honors to its members based on years of service and a written report, or thesis, submitted to the college.

Pretend you have been serving as a hospital administrator for 10 years. Now you want to submit a thesis to the college on a project you introduced at your hospital. If it's accepted, you will be recognized as a diplomat of the college.

Your project has been to analyze the most profitable time after surgery to discharge patients. You've been collecting data on the number of days the average patient spends recovering in hospital each month versus the capped fee (an amount of money that has a set limit) the insurance company is willing to pay for the service.

Here is what you found after six months:

Patient days | Net loss or gain to hospital
January - 4$695
February - 3$550
March - 5$750
April - 4$695
May - 3.5$600
June - 3$550
  • The cost of a bed is $1,389
  • The capped fee is $4,861

Write a brief report to your hospital board outlining what you found. You will want to include your losses and gains over the six-month period. You will also want to tell the college your conclusions and any recommendations you have, based on your findings.
