Real-Life Decision Making

Making decisions is a vital part of the work of a scheduler, says Conrad Helman. He supervises route and crew schedules for a waste disposal company.

"If a truck breaks down, I have to decide who would be the best person to go up that route and finish up the job," says Helman. "I need to determine who I can pull away from their own route and still make sure that they both get done."

You work as a scheduler for a bus transit company. Driver B is scheduled to pick up and drive passengers to a scheduled destination at a scheduled time. At the last minute, you get a phone call from him saying he is sick and will be unable to turn up for work.

The person the sick driver was due to replace, Driver A, is available but has been working all day. Under company policy, he cannot exceed the number of hours he has worked already, since there is the risk of driver fatigue.

But several passengers are already booked for this trip. Some have important appointments to catch. What do you do?
