Real-Life Math -- Solution

  1. You have 150 sheep and each of them eats 0.5 pounds of feed per day.

First, calculate how many pounds of feed the sheep will eat per day, in total.

    150 x 0.5 = 75

The sheep will eat a total of 75 pounds of feed per day.

Next, divide the amount of feed in the bulk feeder by the amount of feed the sheep eat each day.

    700 / 75 = 9.33

The feed in the bulk feeder will last 9 days.

  2. You have 150 sheep and each of them eats 7 pounds of hay per day.

First, calculate how many pounds of hay the sheep will eat per day, in total.

    150 x 7 = 1,050

The sheep will eat a total of 1,050 pounds of hay per day.

Next, divide the amount of hay in the field by the amount of hay the sheep eat each day.

    6,000 / 1,050 = 5.71

The hay in the field will last about 5 days.

"Math skills are exceptionally important," says sheep farmer Craig Rogers. "I can't imagine a day that would go by where we're not trying to determine how much feed we put out for animals based on how many are in the field, or how many days a pasture is going to be able to support them before we're going to have to rotate. It's daily."
