Seismologists can come from the following fields: geology, geophysics, physics or applied mathematics. A university undergraduate degree is necessary. An advanced degree is likely to offer you the best opportunities.

But a PhD is not required, says seismologist Ron Clowes. "And it's not necessarily desirable, since with that much education you price yourself out of the market."

"Most seismology research is not a group activity," says seismologist Susanna Gross. "Anyone considering this career should be aware that it's pretty self-contained. Also, if your primary interest is in the amount of money that you can make as a seismologist, you'll fail. You must be interested in this field for its own sake."
