Real-Life Math -- Solution

Here's what you find:

20002015Number changePercent change
Stage 158911091109 - 589 = 520(520 / 589) x 100 = 88
Stage 21256868 - 125 = -57(-57 / 68) x 100 = -84
Stage 3892525 - 89 = -64(-64 / 25) x 100 = -256
Stage 4631515 - 63 = -48(-48 / 63) x 100 = -76

Stage 1: There was an 88 percent increase in diagnosis.

Stage 2: There was an 84 percent decrease in diagnosis.

Stage 3: There was a 256 percent decrease in diagnosis.

Stage 4: There was a 76 percent decrease in diagnosis.

You notice that there is an increase in the diagnosis of stage 1 cancer and a decrease in the women being diagnosed with later stages of breast cancer. Since cancer is much easier to treat in stage 1, you have positive data for the outcome of the mammography program.
