Real-Life Math -- Solution

You need to figure out the final price of the entertainment center.

Labor: 80 hours x $30 per hour = $2,400
Materials: $470 wood + $40 other materials = $510

Net total: $2,400 + $510 = $2,910
Total tax: $2,910 x 0.07 = $203.70

Total: $2,910 + $203.70 = $3,113.70

The price of the entertainment center will be $3,113.70

Furniture designers use math to calculate invoices. They also use it when ordering wood. They have to estimate how much they'll need, taking into account shrinkage (due to wood drying) and waste.

"Every job I do requires that I figure out materials," says furniture designer Keith Logan. "Then I sit down and try to figure out labor for it. That's basic arithmetic, and it goes with every single project."

Furniture designers use math when designing a new piece on paper. They also do a lot of measuring during production, which often involves converting imperial and metric units.
