Real-Life Communication -- Solution

According to drycleaner Tracy Wong, these are some of the important things you should touch on in your letter to the editor:

  1. People aren't bringing drycleaners "perfectly good clothes." The International Fabricare Institute (IFI) says 41 percent of drycleaning problems are a result of manufacturer's defects. Twenty-one percent of the problems are due to the fact that many clothes aren't meant to be drycleaned because of the nature of their dyes or fabrics.
  2. People don't always take the best care of their clothes. The IFI says consumers irreversibly damage 33 percent of the clothes before they get to the cleaners. The IFI says this damage is caused by consumers staining their clothes and trying to remove the stain in an improper way -- causing more harm than the original stain.
  3. According to an IFI survey of 25,000 garments, only 16 percent of clothes damaged after drycleaning are actually the fault of the drycleaner.

"You might also want to include the point that drycleaners handle millions of garments a year. Only a very, very small percentage of those garments are damaged at the drycleaners," says Wong.

Overall, drycleaners must have good communication skills. They must be good listeners and they must be able to give clear instructions. "You have to be able to relate that your customers and your employees," says Janet Winters. She owns a drycleaning company.
