Educational requirements are standard across the board. "Nowadays, a PhD is a must," says Terry Hutter, president of a geological services company. "A person with a master's would most likely be hired as a technician. That would be the person who would process the samples for the palynologists."

Courses in a variety of areas are essential for students interested in paleobotany or palynology. Make sure you take botany, biology, geology, ecology and paleontology.

An understanding of statistics and computers are also increasingly important. And depending on the chosen specialty, hydrology, climatology, archeology, systematics and evolution may be required.
