Real-Life Math -- Solution

To project the total cost of wages, you must break the process down into steps.

First, determine how many days off each man will have during the time it takes to clear the land. Thirty men are getting 2 days off in every 7. To determine how many days off they will get, divide the total number of days by 7, then multiply by 2.

Days off = (28 / 7) x 2
Days off = 4 x 2
Days off = 8

To determine the number of days for which you will have to pay those men, subtract the total number of days off from the time period allotted.

28 - 8 = 20

Next, to determine the total number of hours for which you will be paying, you must first multiply the number of hours worked each day by the number of total days to be worked.

12 x 20 = 240

Then multiply the total hours for the project by the number of men who will be working.

240 x 30 = 7,200

Finally, to determine to total cost of your wages, multiply the total number of hours worked by all the men by the average cost of the wage.

7,200 x $27 = $194,400

The total amount of the wages you will be paying to have the land cleared is $194,400.

"I use math all the time in this career," says Cindy Crawley. She is a general manager and vice-president in Indianapolis, Indiana. "In estimating, you use it to figure lengths, converting feet to meters, figuring distance, and many other things. I love math, and you definitely need that in this field."
