Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You go with the first suggestion.

You agree to remove parts of the building that are too expensive to repair. This is the real-life decision that Jeffery Howe, an architectural historian, says could be made in a similar situation.

"We are asked a lot of questions," he says. "People want to know the appropriate way to fix a historical building, considering everything, including choosing appropriate colors."

In a perfect world, historic buildings could be saved and restored to perfection. But often, compromise is necessary.

"The city may own a historic building that's falling down," says Howe. "You can give them advice on how to take something off the building without ruining it. You're consulted to see if you can make something work."

As an architectural historian, you're interested in preserving the building and community history. You don't want to demolish a building that is an important focal point in the city.
