Real-Life Math -- Solution

You're an architectural historian helping with the renovation of a building. You help work out how many square feet can be added to the building while still meeting the city's building codes and bylaws.

What is the FSR of this building?

building = 1,620 square feet
lot = 1,800 square feet

1,620 square feet / 1,800 square feet = 0.9

The FSR is 0.9, or 90 percent.

You're allowed to add on to the heritage building, increasing the FSR to 1.6. Remember that you can add square footage by adding a second floor. If you renovate to use all the allowable FSR, how many square feet can you add to your building?

building square footage / lot square footage = FSR
building square footage / 1,800 square feet = 1.6
1.6 x 1,800 square feet = 2,880 square feet

The entire renovated building can be 2,880 square feet.

It is already 1,620 square feet.

2,880 square feet - 1,620 square feet = 1,260 square feet

You can add 1,260 square feet when you renovate the building.
