Real-Life Math -- Solution
You want to analyze the bluegrass songs that were written and recorded
in 1950.
Which month was the most productive in terms of songs recorded?
To find this out, you need to add up the totals for each month.
Jan | 3 + 5 + 1 = 9 |
Feb | 2 + 2 + 3 = 7 |
Mar | 4 + 1 + 6 = 11 |
Apr | 2 + 1 + 0 = 3 |
May | 0 + 2 + 4 = 6 |
Jun | 2 + 2 + 4 = 8 |
Jul | 1 + 0 + 2 = 3 |
Aug | 1 + 2 + 4 = 7 |
Sep | 5 + 3 + 0 = 8 |
Oct | 1 + 3 + 3 = 7 |
Nov | 3 + 0 + 1 = 4 |
Dec | 4 + 4 + 1 = 9 |
You can see from this list that March was the most
productive month.
Which artist had the most productive year in terms
of songs written? This requires adding up the totals for each artist for the
year.
Gwen Nelson:
4 + 2 + 6 + 2 + 0 + 3 + 1 + 4
+ 5 + 2 + 3 + 4 = 36
Heather Whitman:
5 + 3 + 1 + 3 + 4 +
2 + 3 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 0 + 5 = 35
Bud Peabody:
2 + 4 + 8 + 3
+ 4 + 4 + 2 + 5 + 2 + 3 + 2 + 3 = 42
Bud Peabody
wrote the most songs in 1950.
As a musicologist, one of your jobs is
to do research. Gerald Eskelin says as a musicologist, his math skills are
minimal.
Eskelin now is too busy with his court cases to do research.
But when he used to do it, he had to have a statistics manual in one hand
and a computer in the other.
