Real-Life Math

Many software trainers work on contract with schools, colleges and businesses. This requires them to track their expenses and submit invoices to their clients.

You are a software trainer. It's the end of the month, and you have to send bills to your clients. Here is your data:

  • Department of Health -- 152 students
  • Department of Transportation -- 28 students
  • ACME Accounting Services -- 56 students
  • Department of Social Services -- 73 students
  • Pipelines Incorporated -- 17 students
  • Zorro's Grocery Mart -- 23 students
  • Department of Energy -- 69 students

Your daily base rate is $75 per student. Yet you offer special packages for government and non-government clients. Here are the details:

Government clients:

  • 10 percent discount on all government training
  • State tax exempt (the state tax is 7 percent)
  • Federal tax exempt (the federal tax is 7 percent)
  • Another 15 percent discount on 25 or more students (subtract the 10 percent discount first, and then subtract another 15 percent from that amount)

Private sector clients:

  • State and federal taxes are applicable
  • 15 percent discount on 25 or more students

How much will you bill each of your clients?
