Additional Information

To become a volcanologist, you need a good head for science, chemistry, physics and geology.

Begin with a bachelor's degree in earth sciences -- a program offered at most North American universities. Next, you'll have to get an advanced degree. A master's degree won't get you as far as a PhD in geophysics with a specialty in volcanology.

Even geology students who don't want to be volcanologists will study volcanoes, says Rob Duncan. He has an advanced geology degree.

"All students studying to be geologists take one or two courses related to volcanology," he says. "Volcanologists are geologists who have specialized in volcanoes, so they take a lot of courses related to volcanology."
