Real-Life Communication -- Solution

Here's a point-form version of the amendment to your office manual:

Drug-Free Workplace

  • We're required by law to provide a drug-free workplace. If we don't, we will not be eligible for federal grants or contracts.
  • Everyone has to adhere to these rules. Anyone breaking these rules will not be allowed to use university laboratories or libraries.
  • You can be fired for not adhering to these rules. Or you may have to attend a drug rehabilitation program. Students can be expelled and may not be refunded their fees if they break the rules.
  • Employees have to let the office manager know within five days if they've been convicted of any drug offenses while at work.

Smoke-Free Environment

  • We believe very strongly in promoting a healthy, clean environment. Smoking is prohibited inside any university facility, including offices, housing and vehicles.

Alcohol Policy

  • The use of alcohol on the job can affect productivity and efficiency and poses a possible safety problem. Employees must not show up for work drunk, or drive company vehicles under the influence.
  • Drinking off the job that affects work performance is also prohibited. We understand that alcohol abuse is a problem that often requires professional help, and we have a program in place to assist those dealing with this problem.
  • Alcohol isn't allowed on the premises unless it's an officially sanctioned function. Any exceptions to this rule must be approved by the office manager or the dean.
  • You can be fired for breaking these rules.
