Real-Life Communication -- Solution

The loss of Lucinda Collins' ring is covered by her insurance policy. The very first line of the policy reads: "You are insured against all risks of direct physical loss or damage subject to the exclusions and conditions in this policy."

That means lost or damaged items are covered unless the policy specifically excludes them. All of the exclusions are listed under Loss or Damage Not Insured. Nowhere in those points is "mysterious loss" excluded from coverage.

Mysterious loss is a common claim made against insurance policies. All policies do not cover such losses, but the comprehensive policy Collins carries does. She's pretty happy with the outcome -- even though she doesn't have her ring.

According to Donna Popow, a senior director of Knowledge Resources at The Institutes, communication skills are part of the set of skills you'll need to succeed: "The new adjuster should be detail oriented and very organized. They should be able to work well on their own or with a team. They should have good writing skills and good personal communication skills. They should be the type of person who is OK with always having a full in-box. They should be able to prioritize work and maintain a diary of work to be done. "
