Real-Life Decision Making

Imagine you're a meteorologist and storm chaser doing extreme weather research for the federal government.

You're part of a three-person team that drives to areas that are experiencing severe thunderstorms. Your observations and the records from the sensitive atmospheric equipment you're carrying will help scientists better predict tornadoes and damaging hailstorms. The work is exciting. This is nature at its most dramatic -- and potentially most dangerous.

One afternoon, you're called out to chase after a storm that has already generated two tornadoes. Your team is approaching the storm from the northeast. The tornadoes have formed on the southwest edge of the storm. To be close enough to see and record another tornado, you'll have to drive through the middle of the storm -- this is called core punching. Core punching is considered very dangerous. It means driving through potentially heavy rains and unpredictable conditions. It also means risking being caught in a tornado if the storm suddenly changes direction.

One team member wants to push through. She says this is a wonderful chance to see a tornado. How would you feel if you turned back and missed it? Another team member says he doesn't want to risk it. What if someone gets hurt? They turn to you. Your decision will determine the team's next move.

What are you going to do?
