Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You contract out the work.

This is the real-life decision that John Lemmon, a clay animator in North Carolina, would make in this situation. "It's better to do 15 seconds of good animation than two minutes of bad animation," he says.

You pick a good subcontracting company and get involved in their process so that you have some quality control over the scene. Because the company is able to help you out with this small portion of the film, you are able to devote your time to reviewing and editing.

"A complicated in-house special effect shot, using hand animation, may take several days," says Lemmon. "An outside company will cost you, but may mean getting an overall better quality."
