Elevator or Escalator Installer/Repairer

Real-Life Activities

Real-Life Communication

A new elevator repair technician, Chuck, is sent out from your company to repair two lifts at a private residence. You ask him to write a report on the repairs he has done.

"No problem," Chuck says. "Be glad to do that." He picks up his toolbox and heads out the door.

In a couple hours he returns with his report. "Repair technicians have to fill out a slip every time they go out on a repair to say how long it took to do a job and what needed to be done," says Bart Allan, a repair technician.

Chuck's report is much too detailed. He has told you much more than you need to know. Read his report. When you have finished, take the important details and fill in the following job report slip.

Chuck's job report:

After I went for a sandwich, which took about 15 minutes, I hustled over to the Edgewood residence, where they had a couple of lifts they wanted repaired. They live in that beautiful white house on Roundhill Road -- next to the community hall. It was number 1441. I'd say it was about noon when I left to get the sandwich.

First of all, I talked to Edna Edgewood about the stairway chair lift -- a nifty device that attaches to a stairway banister, either on the inside of a building or the outside and hoists the person up. Anyway, this one was on the inside of the building. Apparently the chair, on this economy version, doesn't fold back. I thought it would take about 10 minutes to oil up the hinges and get it working again.

But first, I looked at the second lift -- a dumbwaiter. Aren't they neat things? This was a small one -- about 75-pound capacity -- that runs on hoists so that you can transfer food or drinks from the downstairs kitchen up to the living room. Anyway, the door wouldn't close on this contraption, and so I spent about 15 minutes removing debris that was blocking the door's operation and oiled it.

Then I went back and spent about 10 minutes oiling the chair, and I was all done. I left the building and went to get a coffee before my next job.

Here's the job report slip you need to fill out. Use point form.
