Real-Life Communication

Editors must take in a lot of information, process it quickly, and make decisions that they can back up with well-worded arguments.

You're one of six department editors pitching your story as this edition's lead -- the story promoted in big glossy letters on the cover. Decisions on what gets published are made in a series of meetings that culminate with the cover meeting just days before the issue goes to print.

This month, you're pitching a story about changing female fashions in the workplace. You think the story is important because it talks about major social change. Women are holding more positions of power and this is being reflected in a better selection of professional attire.

The story is also good for the cover, you think, because it appeals to so many readers and because your magazine is the first to spot the trend.

You must decide how to "sell" the story to the editor. She's heard a lot of pitches and you have to stand out. Be upbeat, unique and creative.
