Real-Life Math

It's your job to make sure that all the stories and photographs you want can fit in each issue. How much space you get depends on how many advertisements are sold. The space in your magazine is measured in pages.

For the all-important fall issue, you plan to do 5 major feature stories and photo packages:

  • a piece on fashion for the office, which will take up 5 pages
  • a piece on fashion for school, 6 pages
  • a piece on fashion for formal nightwear, 8 pages
  • a piece on fashion for brides, 3 pages
  • a piece on active fashions, 9 pages

You know the "book" for the upcoming issue will be a total of 80 pages. In order to make money, your magazine must maintain a ratio of at least 60 pages of advertisement per 100 pages -- which works out to 60 percent advertising and no more than 40 percent editorial content.

Will all your stories fit?
