Real-Life Math -- Solution

You're designing the fall edition of your fashion magazine. First, figure out how many pages of content you have in total:

Pages = 5 + 6 + 8 + 3 + 9
Pages = 31

Now figure out what 40 percent of the total pages (80) is:

80 x 0.40 = 32

You have up to 32 pages of editorial space in this issues. Those stories you plan will just fit -- with 1 extra page to spare.

Cosmopolitan, Vogue and Mirabella all try to maintain ratios of at least 60 pages of advertising for every 40 pages of editorial content. Flip through a current issue and you'll see for yourself -- there are a lot of ads in there, but they help make the magazine possible.

According to fashion editor Lisa Tant, math skills won't be your biggest asset in the editing business. "Any math involved can be taken care of quickly with a calculator," she says.
