Real-Life Math -- Solution

You are a winemaker who has just moved from the U.S. to Canada. You will need to make some conversions in order to be able to work with the new measuring and temperature systems.

1.You have a 20-gallon carboy. How many liters can this carboy hold?

Liters = 20 gallons x 3.7 liters per gallon
Liters = 74

The carboy will hold 74 liters of wine.

2. You want to make sure the wine cellar is kept at a constant temperature of 74 F. What temperature is this in Celsius?

To convert Fahrenheit to Celsius: subtract 32, multiply by 5 and divide by 9.

Celsius = [(74 - 32) x 5] / 9
Celsius = (42 x 5) / 9
Celsius = 210 / 9
Celsius = 23.3

The room should be kept at 23.3 C.
