Real-Life Decision Making

Sometimes quality assurance engineers must make hard decisions.

You are a quality assurance engineer. You have been working for many years for a carmaker. You are going to retire in a few years. One day, you realize that the carmaker is making cars with defective gas tanks. If another vehicle hit one of these cars from behind, the gas tank would blow up. The people in the car would probably die.

You report this problem to your supervisor. Your supervisor consults with other people and asks you not to say anything about the defective gas tanks. It would be very expensive if the carmaker stopped making the cars and recalled defective cars. It would also hurt the company's reputation.

On the other hand, if you say nothing, some people might die. No one might know, however, that the car's gas tank caused the explosion.

Should you blow the whistle and call the media? If you do, you'll probably lose your job. You will probably lose your pension. Should you wait a few years until you retire and then contact the media? If you do, many people might die in the meantime.

What do you do?
