Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You alter the design to incorporate the knot.

This is the real-life decision that carver Moe Thompson would make.

"You have to be flexible," says Thompson. As you carve into the wood, you might run into surprises. And unless the fault is too large to overcome, you might consider altering the design.

"If you run into a knot, you try and fit it in with your design," he says. "Or you might change the plan somewhat."

For example, you might consider using the knot as an eye if it's near where the face will be, or using it as a rock, or blending it into the shape of the tree. You might also alter the sculpture's shape so that the knot can be cut out.

"Everything needs to flow together in a good piece," says Thompson.
