Real-Life Math -- Solution

You're a carver getting to show your work at a gallery for the first time. This is what you can expect to earn if you make any sales.

1. The gallery takes a 10 percent commission on Exhibit A.

$350 x 0.10 = $35

The gallery will earn $35 for selling the piece.

2. You sell all your pieces, and the gallery takes its usual 10 percent. How much do you earn?

Total of all your pieces = $350 + $300 + $400 + $550
Total of all your pieces = $1,600

The gallery takes 10 percent, so you earn 90 percent.

$1,600 x 0.90 = $1,440

You would take home $1,440 worth of sales.
