Real-Life Math -- Solution

You are a zoologist studying frogs. You study each of their physiological characteristics. Right now you are calculating the length of their jumps.

1. If the first frog is 2/3 of an inch long, how far should it be able to jump? Remember: a frog should be able to jump 18 times its body length.

Distance = 2/3 inches x 18
Distance = 2 x 18 / 3
Distance = 36 / 3
Distance = 12

This frog should be able to jump 12 inches, which is 1 foot.

2. A second frog leaped 1 1/4 feet. How many inches did it jump?

Inches = 1 1/4 feet x 12 inches per foot
Inches = (1 x 12) + (12 / 4)
Inches = 12 + 3
Inches = 15

This frog jumped 15 inches.
