Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You give them your opinion.

Although you can see there are some communication problems between John and Mary, you believe their relationship can be salvaged if they stick together and work on the problems they face.

However, even though you believe they can make their marriage work, as a counselor, it is not your place to make the decision. Only the couple or family should be responsible for making such final, life-changing decisions.

"A wife or husband in counseling will sometimes ask me if they should get a divorce," says David Kaplan. "I have to decide whether to give my opinion. Unless there are very unusual circumstances -- physical abuse, for example -- I will not tell them if they should stay together."
