Real-Life Decision Making

You are a visual effects technician working at a small, independent animation and visual effects house. After numerous years at the company, you have been given the opportunity to lead a crew of artists. This is a big deal for you and you want to do a good job.

You and your crew are currently in post-production, working on a major motion picture that is due to be out next spring. It's nearing the end of the project and everyone is putting in 12-hour days, if not more. Tensions are high and stress is mounting.

There is one crew member in particular who is having a difficult time. The shot she is working on involves a cluster of flames transforming into a dragon. You see her struggle more and more with each attempt that she makes. But you know that she is absolutely determined to get it right. This artist is not one to give up easily.

"Sometimes you have an artist and a shot in a film that just don't match up properly," says Tom Bertino. Bertino heads an animation and visual effects program at an arts university in San Francisco.

Unfortunately, your artist's determination does not help the fact that the scene is still not done. Every minute counts in this business and this shot must get done.

What do you do?
