Laser Printer Repair Technician

Real-Life Activities

Real-Life Communication

Technicians understand how machines work. They can keep them running and repair them for people who rely on them but don't necessarily know how they work.

Laser printer repair technicians are in the same position. Often, office managers or business owners will want to know what technicians are doing inside their printers.

Why? Well, for one thing, they want to know they are not being ripped off. They want to know that the technician is doing more than simply brushing off the excess toner powder for that $200 bill.

You are in the office ready to head home for the day when someone calls with a problem. They have to print a major report and their printer is severely jammed with paper.

They want you to help them.

Using the following instructions from a repair manual, talk the caller through the repair procedure.

Tools: Screwdriver, needle-nose pliers

Time: About 15 minutes to repair

Procedure:

  1. Open cover.
  2. Find screws holding fusing assembly (solid black plastic cover).
  3. Loosen screws no more than three full rotations.
  4. With screws loose, lift fusing assembly straight up. It will move only an inch or so.
  5. While someone else holds up the assembly, use pliers to pull paper free.
  6. Replace fusing assembly, making sure it is down all the way.

Future tips: Put less paper in in-feed bin.
