Real-Life Math -- Solution

First find how much product you will need to fertilize 1 acre.

You know that 1 acre of fairway needs 10 pounds of the active ingredient. You also know that one pound of fertilizer contains 75 percent (0.75) of the active ingredient.

10 / 0.75 = 13.3 pounds of fertilizer per acre

Now you can multiply that by 40 to get the amount of fertilizer you need for the full 40 acres of fairway.

40 x 13.3 = 532 pounds of fertilizer

Now you know that you need to get 532 pounds of fertilizer to do the job.

"Math is so important in the turf sector that the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America has produced a manual of mathematics for turfgrass managers," says agronomist Brian Holl.
