Real-Life Math

Whether your specialty is Halloween costumes or full-length gowns from the Renaissance era, costume designers spend a great deal of time working with numbers.

"You use basic math skills all the time," says costume designer Patti Nickel. "You have to plot a pattern. In costume books, there are graphics for patterns and you might have to enlarge them 8 times."

Often, she needs to adjust a pattern for individual customers. "There's building an ease allowance in the bust or the waist because you need to think of comfort."

You are a costume designer who specializes in clothing worn between the 14th and 16th centuries. You have been hired to work with a local acting troupe on a production of Romeo and Juliet. You know what you need to buy in order to make the costumes, but you want to make sure you keep your expenses down. Here's what you need:

8 yards of cloth
30 buttons
5 yards of lace

There are 2 stores where you can go to buy your supplies. You need to figure out which store will give you the better deal.

Store A

1 yard of cloth = $1.15
Package of 5 buttons = $3.80
1 yard of lace = $1.95

Store B

1 yard of cloth = $1.25, or 3 yards for $3
Buttons = $0.75 each
5 yards of lace = $8.60
