Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You alter the design of the coat.

You decide the outfit is worth including in the fall catalog. You will make a few changes so that the coat is more comfortable. While the coat is not quite as authentic, the outfit still looks like something a musketeer might wear.

This is the real-life decision made by costume designer Patty Nickel in a similar situation.

"I had to rethink what to do," she says. "I changed a few seams and deleted a few seams so that the coat was less tapered. It looked good and it still gave the right idea."

Nickel says that when she's designing costumes, accuracy frequently has to give way to what the client wants. "You may want something accurate and the client may want something not so accurate. But you have to meet the client's needs."
