You are a musical instrument repairer. You own your own shop.

Every week, you send an order to your supplier for various parts you need to do the repairs. This week, however, things got messed up. You ordered 25 sets of guitar strings, 200 screws and 30 gallons of glue. They only shipped you 20 sets of guitar strings and 80 screws. You didn't receive any glue at all.

To add insult to injury, they billed you for the full amount.

This isn't the first time this has happened. You decide to cut your losses and pay them for the few parts you actually got, but order the rest of the parts elsewhere. Write a letter to the manager of the parts supplier explaining your decision and why you've adjusted the bill.

"It is wise to keep copies of everything you do in your business, especially where spending money is concerned," says repairer John Vossos. He uses a computer to fax and store orders. Doing this, he adds, "involves computer literacy and math skills."
