Real-Life Math -- Solution

To find the average score, begin by adding up all the scores:

18+ 12+ 11+ 5+ 19+ 13+ 7+

5+ 22+ 9+ 13+ 14+ 5+ 11+

13+ 8+ 9+ 12+ 10+ 13+ 12+

11+ 15+ 4+ 10+ 9+ 15+ 10 = 315

Then divide it by the number of students:

315 / 28 = 11.25

The average score for this class on the test is 11.25 out of a possible 25 marks.

Now figure out the percentage:

(11.25 x 100) / 25 = 45

The class's average score was 45 percent. It looks like you'll have to spend a little more time teaching these concepts.

As for how to deliver the bad news to your class, be positive, but point out the room for improvement.

While math and science teachers use math the most, all kinds of teachers use math skills, says math teacher Janet Munroe-Carpenter. Calculating average grades is just one example. Another example is an English teacher calculating the reading level of a text based on the average length of words.

"Definitely, there's a lot of math in different subject areas," says Munroe-Carpenter. "[For example], there's all kinds of math in music."
