Real-Life Math -- Solution

"Years ago, blacksmithing required very advanced mathematics," says Brian Gilbert, a professional blacksmith and editor of Hammer's Blow magazine.

Even today, blacksmiths constantly use math to determine the proper widths and lengths of pieces of metal. Without math skills, blacksmiths would have a hard time completing a project properly.

This is how the equation should look:

The diameter of bolt's shaft + thickness of stock being used for the collar = X
X multiplied by 22/7 = the length of stock required to make the collar

Therefore, your equation would read:

5/8 inch + 1/4 inch = 7/8 inch
7/8 x 22/7 = 154/56, which can be reduced to 2 3/4 inches

That means the length of stock needed to build a collar for the bolt would be 2 3/4 inches.
