Real-Life Math -- Solution

Fill in the first formula with the data you have on your applicants:

Number of applicants = 15
Hours of tutoring per week = 5

R = A x H
R = 15 x 5
R = 75

Then fill in the second formula with the data you have on your current corps of volunteers:

Number committed to 5 hours = 3
Number committed to 4 hours = 3
Number committed to 3 hours = 4

T = 5X + 4Y + 3Z
T = 5(3) + 4(3) + 3(4)
T = 15 + 12 + 12
T = 39

Now, determine the difference between the 2 figures:

Volunteer hours needed = R - T
Volunteer hours needed = 75 - 39
Volunteer hours needed = 36

You need to find enough volunteers to perform 36 additional hours of tutoring per week.
