Real-Life Math
It's time for the annual town rodeo. Silver Saddles, a company
that sells silver riding accessories, wants to promote its new line of silver
belt buckles to rodeo riders.
The clients have their hearts set on
parading 25 horses in the downtown square. Each rider will carry a silver
banner with the Silver Saddles logo and a picture of the new belt buckle.
Using the list below, calculate how much it will cost Silver Saddles to stage
this media event.
Harry's Riding Stable will supply the horses,
riders and equipment needed. He calculates it will take 3 hours to get the
horses and riders downtown and back to the stable. (Careful: only certain
costs are charged by the hour.)
Horse rental:
25 horses at $5 per hour
Equipment rental: 25 bridles at $1 each;
25 saddles at $2 each
Riders: $10 per hour
2 vehicles
and drivers to direct traffic: $40 each for the vehicle; $10 per hour
for the drivers
1 person clean-up crew: $7 per hour for 3 hours
Designer's
cost to make banners: 2 hours to design the banners at $35 per hour; 20
hours to sew the banners at $20 per hour; $200 material for the banner
Your
time to write a press release: 1 hour at $35 per hour
Your time
to distribute releases, talk to the media and arrange the parade: 5 hours
at $35 per hour
Total the above costs. Then add 20 percent
of this total to calculate your agency's fees for setting up the event.
