Real-Life Communication

You are the owner-operator of My Backhoe, an independent backhoe contractor company. Marie Jones has asked you to give her an estimate of how much it will cost to dredge a 100-yard ditch running through her yard and take away the sludge.

You figure the work will take between 6 and 8 hours to finish. You charge between $60 and $65 an hour for the backhoe, depending on the difficulty of the job. You have an arrangement to pay a dump truck driver $70 an hour. You feel this is a fairly straightforward job, but you never know what you will find when you start digging.

You will want to warn Mary that dealing with any obstacles, like bedrock, may cost extra. It is standard policy to require the homeowner to research and mark any gas, water or cable lines in the area. You know she has asked at least one other contractor for an estimate, so you'll want to be competitive.

Write her a one-page letter outlining the job as you see it, her responsibilities and your best quote.
